Woods and Finishes

Since our signs are carved rather than laser burned or sandblasted more options

for materials and finishes are available since we don’t have to select them based

only on how they burn or blast. Our standard materials are solid Black Walnut

for darker finishes, cherry for medium color, and maples and pines for a light color.

On special order we can select a variety of woods including:

Honduras Mahogany

White or red oak

White Pine

Teak

Cypress

and many others.

We prefer to use the natural color of the wood rather than stains to get

the desired hue since stains can absorb unevenly in carved areas. We

can adjust the hue with dyes if it is desired.

Our standard finish is a pore filler (on open pored woods) followed by

Multiple coats of the highest quality marine spar varnish. For interior use

Other options such as laquer and Danish oil are available.

The lettering can be most any color, but we find favorites are the pearl

Glazed off white for the darker woods and forest green for medium and light

Woods.

To get an overall idea of color schemes we provide here some layouts

As a selection aid. The colors may not be exact (it depends on your monitor)

but it can give a good general idea of the appearance. There will be some

nice color highlights in chip carved letters due to their three dimensional

nature.
